Ai-Ais

Ai-Ais is a wonderful place to relax. At these hot springs, the water is naturally warmed deep underground and it rises through cracks in the rocks. When the water comes up it is still 60 degrees celsius. The Nama population called this place Ai-Ais which means ‘fire water’.

Nowadays, Ai-Ais is an ideal base to visit the Fish River Canyon. This is the second longest canyon in the world. Only the Grand Canyon in United States is bigger. This gap is about 160 km long, up to 27 km wide and in some places up to 550 meters deep. A 90 km long walking path runs through the canyon. There is not always water flowing through the canyon and the trail is easily accessible.
