Windhoek

Windhoek is the starting point of the journey through Southern Africa for many self drive travellers. It is the capital as well as the largest city of Namibia. Because the city is spacious, it is a great place to acclimatise in Africa.

Windhoek is situated at a height of about 1650 metres and has approximately 320,000 inhabitants. Namibia used to be a colony of Germany, and the German influences are still visible in this city in things like the architecture.

If you have a day or afternoon to spend in this city, you will not be bored. It is the ideal place to get supplies for your journey. You can also, for instance, take a walk through the streets with colonial buildings and the Christuskirche (the famous red church).
