Route & itinerary

14 days

Day 1: Windhoek

The first day of your self drive tour for you to explore Namibia. Upon arrival you will meet our partner of the car rental company for a transfer to the depot and for an extensive instruction and handling of formalities. The first night of the trip is planned in Windhoek so you have enough time to acclimatize and get acquainted with the 4×4. Windhoek is also the place where to buy a large part of your groceries for the self drive.

– optional is an accommodation outside of Windhoek.

Day 2: Sesriem

When you did your shopping yesterday, you can start early today for the trip to Sesriem and the Namib Desert (Namib Naukluft Park). Your journey will bring you through the Remshoogte Pass and you arrive in Sesriem in the afternoon.

Day 3: Sesriem

A full day to visit the sand dunes of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. Advice is to start early in the morning so that you are on time at the dunes for sunrise, a breathtaking spectacle with red and orange colors and deep shadows.

Day 4: Swakopmund

After two nights at the sand dunes and Sesriem your self-drive trip now continues and the next destination is Swakopmund on the Atlantic coast. The path that you will follow crosses the Kuisib Canyon and the vast gravel fields of the Namib Desert. In the early afternoon we arrive in Swakopmund. Accommodation is a bed & breakfast with a unique view. In Swakopmund, you can easily eat out in a restaurant.

Day 5: Uis

After breakfast at the lodge you have time to explore Swakopmund and/or do some shopping. Along the way you can visit Cape Cross or Spitzkoppe. Then continue to the next destination of this self drive trip; Uis and Spitzkoppe.

Day 6: Twyfelfontein

A special day with your 4×4 car. Adventures tracks, where the 4×4 and low gear and the supplied GPS are indispensable today. Today a beautiful trip through Damaraland; a landscape unique and incredibly. Although it’s a short trip it will take the whole day because it’s a true 4×4 road where the speed will be low. You have the chance of spotting ostrich, oryx, various antelopes and perhaps the most exclusive black rhino.

Day 7: Grootberg

Before driving further north, there is the opportunity to pay a short visit to the Petrified Forest. Where you can find petrified trees of millions years old. The very old Welwitscha plant (600+ years) can be found here. Then direction Grootberg.

Day 8: Grootberg

Today, enough activities to do, all organized by the lodge (at your own expense). You can do elephants and rhinos trackings, a 3-hour guided walk in search of flora and fauna or make an excursion to a Himba village. Afterwards you can enjoy the beautiful view while sipping a drink in the lodge.

Day 9: Etosha National Park/ Dolomite

Today your self-drive trip continues to the Etosha National Park. In total you are going to stay three nights in this vast wildlife park at three different lodges. Etosha makes you likely to see all kinds of wildlife, including elephants, rhinos and lions. The floodlit waterholes at the lodges are highly recommended.

Day 10: Etosha National Park/ Okaukuejo

A second day in Etosha National Park. You can choose to make an early morning game drive and return in Okaukeujo or to start directly the game drive towards Halali. When you choose a short morning game drive around the Okaukuejo camp you can have brunch and then leave. You will arrive later in the Okaukuejo Rest Camp.

Day 11: Etosha National Park/ Namutoni

The third day of your stay in the Etosha National Park. Also today, an extensive game drive towards Namutoni. And also today you have the choice between to make an early game walk around the camp or to continue the self-drive trip to Namutoni.

Day 12: Waterberg Plateau National Park

Towards Waterberg Plateau it’s possible to make a nice stop at the Hoba Meteorite (world’s largest). Then continue with the 4×4 car to Waterberg.

Day 13: Waterberg Plateau National Park

Waterberg Plateau is an ecologically divers area that invites for walks. With success the black rhino was reintroduced in 1989. Embark on a guided hike with local rangers.

Day 14: Windhoek (return flight)

The last day of your Namibia trip, after handing in the 4×4 car at the depot in Windhoek the shuttle service will drop you off at the airport.

We would recommend Selfdrive4x4.com to our friends

We booked a last minute 17 day self drive trip through Namibia with this company and everything was just perfect. Contact with the company was very pleasant and they kept us posted with updates about the progress of our trip. Gps, maps, book and 12V equipment was sent to our home as soon as our trip was confirmed.

Price wise it was a great deal and everything in Namibia (car and layovers) were to our satisfaction. We would definitely book again with this company and we would recommend it to our friends.
